Does anyone actually make a 1 GB DIMM? All the 1 GB DIMMs I see at ramseeker turn out to be two piece double 512 "kits". Thats very gay!

I can't imagine they'd be more expensive than two 512's?

Ouch you guy are playing rough.

The thing that would make it cost so much is you would need what 32 mb chips on the stick and right now we only have 16 mb chips, so just like with all tech the biger you get the more it will cost.

Ignoring the fruitcakes for a moment, there are plenty of 1GB DIMMS available. You can get a 1GB PC2100 DIMM for around $585 from Corsair. All 1GB modules that I know of are double stacked (that is twice as high as a regular module).

Why do you need them anyway?
Any PowerMac G4 can go only up to 1.5 Gig and there are enough slot to put 3 512K. Why would you want to pay more.

Becuase isn't that 1.5 GB only based on the fact that at the time there were only 512MB Dimms? Wouldn't three 1GB DIMMs give you 3 GB of RAM in a G4?

No, I think it has something to do with 32-bit addresses...I read somewhere that after the system takes it's chunk out of the bus (or RAM?), it only leaves a certain range for addresses, which leaves you with ~1.5 GB of addressable space. I wish I could remember where I read it :-/

AFAIK OS 9 can only access 1.5 Gigs max but OS X has no theoretical limit. I know people with 2 GB of RAM in the old G4 (which had 4 slots) and OS X can access all of it. I'm sure 3 GB would also work.

How can OS X have no theoretical limit? (I'm interested as I have a 4-slot G4 here...)

I've seen 1 GB DIMMs but they are hideously expensive...over $500 each...

As for the limit for 32 bit processors the anwser is 4 GB of RAM: 2^32 is 4.3 x 10^9 = 4 GB. This is the maximum number of address the computer may have.

I'd like to see an OS X system w/ 4 GB or more of RAM for those who use Maya or other industrial grade SW that needs that kind of RAM capacity.

But that's more because all dos based windows versions can't use more than 512MB, iirc. any reasonably new board can go above that, and it'll show up with an NT based system, or Linux.

What good is 4 gig of Ram when we use such a S L O W memory system on the Mac.. Where is the 200Mhz+ DDR Memory support and 200Mhz+ System buses??

On a slightly different note....

Has any one here purchased ram from Memory to go? Their prices are comparable to 1-800-4memory for a 512Mb stick. ($117.00) However their 1 Gb memory upgrade kit is a hundred dollars less than anyone else out there. ($215.00)

If this is a scam I think people should know about it, if it is not then why have their prices been consistently lower for weeks?

They're not really a scam-- I've ordered from them and received product expeditiously, but if you need to return bad RAM or have some kind of warranty issue, LOOK OUT! do a search here, there's more than a few topics about their utter intransigence when it comes to customer satisfaction.
