Greetings All ::

I'd like to hear some opinions of back-up devices and
technologies.

What do you like?

What do you hate?

Advantages/Disadvantages of brands/media.

Can anyone reccommend a FireWire device
that will backup 30GB?

Hi.

Just like to pop in and say i would like some input on this too.
Considering to get an external firewire drive mainly as a backup unit.

Also...is it possible to password protect an external FW drive?

Thanks.
Tom.

I'm looking at tape storage because of the mass amount of data I need to store. Possibly DDS-4... or DLT. I have a DDS-3 on my sunblade 100... and it is really easy to use unix based commands just to move crap to tape. The thing is that it is fairly static data. Digital Video, general backups, even MP3s.... and I don't need to get at it much. Plus..... tape holds a lot of data... and is kinda cheap and can be used a number of times.

CD's don't do it for me anymore.... I'm not sure about DVD unless it is RW.

I guess it depends on what the true meaning of "backup" is.

regards...

IMHO backing up is something everyone should do - it's the what, when and how that cause the most grief. I prefer to use Dantz Retrospect (the OSX beta is still quirky) and others prefer to do the file-by-file technique. The device and media you use will be best determined by the amount of value you place on your data and the depth of your pockets. As you are looking to backup 30GB I will assume that the 30GB of data will not have changed more than 50% for backup #2. And that for backup #3 you would need to backup less than 10GB of new data.
If this is the case I would reccomend going with CD. Yeah, I know, it's a pain the first time around, but it only gets easier as time progresses.
If the above is not true and you are backing up new 30GB data sets or just prefer to not increment your backups then, by all means go with tape. The media will cost you more than CDR media, but then again we're talking about your data right?!

Just a thought,

p.s. you may wanna check out APS Tech for a starter.

There's time enough, but none to spare.
