Searching around, the Nomand II MG seemed like the best pick, but for its high price. Does anyone have any experience with it or others?? Also, what do people think about the new hybrid CD players that can also play CD-R and CD-RW discs filled with MP3's?? that seems like an inticing offer. thanks

Hey flyhigh,
Another option to consider is a MiniDisk player. A good player/recorder can go for $175-$300, and the 75min disks are only about $3......Unlike the VERY costly Memory for MP3 players. And they can record from any Audio source, not just a computer.
The only downside is the realtime recording instead of a fast USB download. I've heard something about digital adapters for MD, but I'm not sure. I have a SHARP MD and I love it.

Personal preference, the new Hip Zip from Iomega. Reasonably modular and uses rather inexpensive media. Not prefect, but good for me.

It depends on what you are looking to use an MPS player for... if you want something that is ultra portable and doesn't skip, the new ones that use CD-Rs aren't as feasible, because they are susceptible to the same skipping issues of CD's (even with the built in buffer), not to mention they are bulkier than the portable ones. On the other hand, they are great if you just want to be able to play many mp3's in a certain place, ie taking them from your computer to your stereo.
I like the MP3 players from iJam...

I like my new Rio500. It comes with 64mb on board(about 1 hour) and has room for a smart media card add on. I use mine for when I run, and I never run for more than an hour, so capacity is just about right for me. It's a nice no nonsense player.

I'm going with the Minidisk player. It isn't bigger than most MP3 players, uses the same psychoacoustic method of audio data reduction (just another decompression algorithm), is about the same efficiency/quality (some claim Sony's ATRAC 4.5 is better than MP3 at 128 or 160 kbit). It also is a real audio appliance, not a computer that wants to be one. You can use it as easy as a Walkman. Also it's been around for almost 10 years.

Bought my girlfriend a Nomad II, and we love it. No problems thus far, though I'll be happier if Apple buys the SoundJam as they're rumored to do. The Nomad uses SoundJam to load files, etc.
