Last night I got my brand new iMac 800MhZ home along with a brand new iPod. I set up the iMac and started playing around with it. Then I hooked up the iPod. It went through it's first synch but then it stalled.

When I disconnected it, all I got on the screen of the iPod was a symbol that looks like the same one that's on the FireWire port. Figuring the battery might not be charged yet, I then hooked it back up. This then caused the iMac to freeze: neither keyboard nor mouse would function. However, the iMac was still registering the actions, as when I disconnected the iPod, the computer reacted to all of the keystrokes and mouse button pushes I had done while it was frozen.

I haven't tried again today- had to go to work. Feels wierd though- Has anyone else had this problem?

I think it has to do with your iPod's firmware. While it may say 1.0.4...it's different from the 1.0.4 that you can download from the Apple support site. If I remember correctly, there's a note in the Readme for the firmware about iMacs.

Hope this helps.

Yeah the same thing happened to me. My ipod was stuck with the firewire icon on the it's screen. It caused my iMac to lockup everytime I plugged it in. Just reboot your iPod by holding down the Menu and Play buttons for 20 seconds. Everything should be ok. Did you remember to drag your iPod from the desktop to the trash before you disconnected it? That's what caused my iPod to freeze.

Oh- maybe that's it. I've downloaded the new firmware update too, just in case. Thanks!
