Hey, I've got an external Lacie d2 300 GB harddrive. When it's not doing anything, it's really really quiet, which is great. But when it's active and I'm transfering files to or from it, it makes these horrible ticking sounds. I'm pretty sure it's the drive itself and not the fan, because the ticking seems to correspond to the start/finish of transfering a file and I've never heard a fan make this sound (and it doesn't make this sound on lower speeds).

But yeah, the ticking is very loud - it sounds like someone his hitting a piece of wood with a metal rod over and over, really fast. Any suggestions or advice would be great!

mine does this as well (same hard drive as yours) i think this is a normal thing durring transfers. if it starts happening randomly, on its own, that's when it'll be time to worry.

Yeap. LaCie d2 250GB Triple interface drive.

It uses the ST3250823A (Barracuda 7200.8) hard drive from Seagate.

Be happy you don't have to call LaCie service. I bought a 500Gb with the ticking and bad writes and they outwaited the warranty to reply and turned me down. This company makes junk. takes your money, and runs like a mugger. I will be using their harddrive as a real brick.
