I have a LaCie photon20visionII connected via DVI to a G4, it's a relabelled LG model.

When adjusting the brightness, the monitor actually seems to vary the contrast rather than the backlight intensity. An all black screen does not change, for example. Other colours get washed out or over-saturated if the brightness level is changed. This should not be happening.

Why is the screen not allowing adjustment of the backlight? Did they leave out some circuitry to save money, hoping that most users wouldn't notice?

It can't because the lowest light setting is determined (and limited) by hardware. When researching HDTVs, i learned that lasma has the darkrest blacks, and LCDs have one of the lesser blacks (blacks are bright).

the reason is how electronics works. the way LCDs work, once a pixel is "on", it isn't "precise" enough to make it darker than a certain pont or it'll turn off (and it'll be too black).
