I'm sure this topic has been brought up before, but I can't find it amongst the board topics.
I just bought an Apple Pro Keyboard as an early Xmas present for a friend, and for the life of me I cannot find the usb driver anywhere on Earth.
Upon restart/boot, I get an error message saying the Apple Extended USB keyboard driver was not present, and then it offers to use Software Update to download it for me. (This is, of course, useless to anyone who has dsl running under MacPoet, as it thwarts any "automatic" Remote Access attempt to get online. When I do get online and try Software Update, it reports that there's nothing to update.)
I cannot find the neccessary driver at Apple.com or anywhere else. Having bought the G4 some six months ago - before the Pro Keyboard ever came out, but having updated to 9.0.4, one would assume the specific driver for this new product is downloadable from somewhere.
I hate Apple now. The level of technical hoops one has to jump through nowadays to make use of even basic functionality has now reached that of pc's.
(The keyboard works, except for the extra keys. And of course, my friend has to deal with that error message after every restart.)

No - that doesn't work. The machine freezes just after startup.
And the 1.4.6whatever usb extension talked about elsewhere as a fix for this problem freezes the machine when I double-click the disk image.

archlina,
Here is the trick on that. Download the new keyboard extensions, there are five of them. One by one, replace the old ones by dragging each to the trash, and putting the new ones into the extension folder. All except USB Support - trash that one. Restart. Now everything should work perfectly, except if you try to boot from a utility cd or your OS cd. For that you only need to substitute old keyboard, so don't throw it away. Good luck!

Fredo!
You mean the bil207 recommended one?
I'll have to try it tomorrow at my friend's place, and will get back to you on it afterwards. Thanks.

archinla,
Yes, bil207 has the right extensions. It's been working for me for about six weeks now. I saved the old extensions, and made a copy of the new ones, in case I need them in future. Just follow the procedure I outlined above, and let me know how it turns out. Oh, and I'm sorry I misspelled your name in my previous post.

Well - I followed those instructions to the letter, and the G4 gets a bomb message half way through the extensions loading, citing an 'unimplemented trap' or something. And this machine has very, very few 3rd party extensions running - none of which are obscure. So I'm still at a loss.
I'm actually disappointed in the keyboard itself now. I had read somewhere that the key action wasn't "spongey", like the regular keyboard that came with the G4 originally. But they feel much the same to me. If it was my G4, I would now be looking for 3rd party keyboards, or an adb adaptor for an older Mac keyboard.

archinla,
I'm really sorry the extensions didn't work for you. I guess you'll have to wait for 9.1
Happy Holidays.
