I just received my new QPS QUE Firewire 24x burner and after doing my research on this drive, i am stumped at what I see ad the Recorder info:

QPS CD-W524E (MMC3)
Firmware 1.5A

No Plextor? No Sanyo? So what is it?

Also, when i check the Apple System profiler, i get this:

QBP-2 Bridge (QUANTUM FIREBALL ST6.45 0F0C)
Vendor ID: 1F3
Speed: 400 mb./sec
vendor name QPS (Quantum)
Unit Version: 66691 (0F0C)

Any Ideas what i gots???

BTW: Toast and DiscBurner work great in OSX -- iTunes No good!

It should be the Teac CD-524E Mech. The reason it shows up as QPS is probably due to them using a custom OEM fimware version that makes the drive show up as such. Also QPS probably uses a custom face plate.

MMC3 refers to a disk-at-once compatibility feature.

Also, the ATA to firewire bridge in the device will show up in the system profiler. In this case, it would seem to be an OEM device manufactured by Quantum and custom ID'd by QPS.

So do you think that if i modify the TEAC iTunes plug-in similar to the way people did the Plextor plug-in, I may be able to trick iTunes into thinking that its a CD-RW it supports....

I'm gonna go for it......I'll let you know

I just got exactly the same drive, yesterday. So, I'm very interested by what you can get with this drive and iTunes...

By the way, I tried writing a few megs of files on a CDRW while in the finder. Everything went smooth as silk. But when I opened the drive icon in the OSX finder, I got a window showing my files but with a lock in the window. I couldn't erase any of the files or put some more on the CD. Is it the way it should be on Macs ? At work, my PC with DirectCD, will show the files and let me do whatever I want with them, as if they were written to a disk drive. But not so on my G4. Is this "normal" Mac behavior ?

Glad i'm not the only one with a 24x Teac....

i tried doing the Teac file modification ( similar to the Plextor) and it unfortunatly didn't work!!!!

So i still have a super fast 24x drive that still wont work in iTunes (until 2.0.4 i hope)

haven't tried the CD-RW thing yet ... i'll report back soon

Apparently, we have exactly the same drive. I've tried the same modification and SUCCESS !!! I can now burn directly from iTunes 2.03.

I used HexEdit (http://hexedit.sourceforge.net/) to modify:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiscRecording.framework/
Versions/A/Resources/DevicePlugIns/TeacCDR.device-plugin, working on a copy of it, then copying the resource back in place with su cp in Terminal.

The only change I made was to replace CD-W516E by CD-W524E. Give it a try, it should work for you too...

I did this and it worked but it only burns at 4x in iTunes... Is there anyway to make it burn at the full 24x.

iTunes 2.0.3 recognizes my QPS 24x10x40 as QPS CRD-BP1500P.

My brother is running iTunes 2.0.2 and iTunes doesn't even see the burner.

I got this burner from outpost.com and it seems relatively new (delivered a couple weeks ago).

You may not be able to burn at full 24X speed. iTunes now decodes on the fly your computer now has to be able to supply raw audio data to the burner at 24X normal playing speed.

Given that iTunes normally takes up 30% of the CPU playing at 1X and even if you are generous and say that only a sixth of that goes to mp3 decoding (ie 5%), that means that iTunes can't decode faster than 20X even if it had the CPU all to itself.

On my G4 500 DP, I can manage about 16X iTunes burns.

24X is OK for data burning, but is currently a little overkill for audio.

hey i have the same CD-RW, just bought it today.
sucks to me for not doing my homework, it isn't supported by iTunes - anyone know when an update to 2.0.3 is due? Macworld?

QBP-2 Bridge ( CD-W524E 1.5A)
Apple disc burning:Supported
Vendor ID: 1f3
Speed: 400 Mb/sec
GUID: 127746d
Vendor name: QPS
Unit version: 66691 (1.5A)

update: I tried Calli's method (see above) and now I'm burning via iTunes

All you have to do is ask the obvious... here follows email response from Que!

------------------------------------------------------
Hi,

Thank you for your interest in our product.

Per your question, for the 16x firewire CDRW, the mechanism is a Teac or
Yamaha. To see if it's a Plextor, the serial # starts with the letter "W"
then follows the numbers.
------------------------------------------------------

Unfortunately I was seduced by a special offer on an alternative. After two days of being very impressed, the bus power burnt out my Firewire ports.

I AM NOT ALONE.

Thanks, but that's very 'un-informative' infomation, as I would expect from a company chain e-mail. The Mech is a Teac or a Yamaha.. that's kind of 'no duh' info, but the question still would stand, well, WHICH is it? Also it could be a Sanyo so that's not even accurate.

Also this has been long since resolved.

If you want to know what mech something is, take 2 seconds and look up the SN# infomation on a site like CDRinfo.com, linked to above. There are only so many 24x Mechs on the market right now, it's not that hard to pinpoint,a nd if you have the SR#, it doesn't change, despite whoever slapped a faceplate or a stencil on someone else's drive.
