There seems to be a lot of noise out there regarding which webcams work well and which don't. I have a G4/400(AGP) running 9.0.4 with ADSL to the internet. Main use would be videoconferincing (iVisit), but it would be nice to film short vids, single frame captures and webcam, all without breaking the bank.
Would especially like to hear from anyone using a QuickCam VC under 9.0.4 - does it work well/at all? Also, there are varied opinions on the Kensington VGA - has anyone gotten it to capture at more than 4-5fps?
Any success/horror stories reg. your webcam experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hi... I have the quickcam VC, USB version, and have been using it. It works well, but to be honest, I am very dissapointed in the image quality, which has not improved one bit since the color quickcam was launched like.. how long?!? Six years ago?!? It seems like they are trying to milk the cow.
I have heard good things about 3com and intel cams. But never tried them.
Good luck, as I want toet a better cam as well, I would love to hear what you found.

I just got the 3Com and it's really good. Very impressive under low light (I pointed it at a dark corner of the room about 15' away and the result looked bright and well-lit with good details).

Have you been able to get it to record video? I've seen some people complaining that they can't get it to grab more than single frames.

I have posted previously about this, but it's worth repeating.
I purchased the 3Com HomeConnect for about $150 and am very happy with it. Picture quality is excellent and the software (downloadable from the 3Com web site) is very complete and intuitive. I use it regularly with CU-See-Me and again, can't say enough about it's picture quality.
I am using it on a PowerMac 7500 upgraded to a 250 mhz G3 with a Belkin USB card installed. I am running Mac OS 9.04.

I've had excellent results with the Panasonic Egg Cam (which requires a video-in capable video card), and the USB Kritter camera. The Egg Cam is a real video camera, and gives correspondingly good video, but the Kritter does nearly as well for videoconferencing (20fps using iVisit).

Whatever you do, do NOT buy Kensington's entry-level color USB webcam (the $50 one, not the VGA model). Picture quality is wretched, and the VideoCamWorks software ran sluggishly on my iBook - a 300mHz G3. Not to mention the hour-plus I spent installing updaters to VideoCamWorks and CU-See Me... I rarely return things, but this dog I took back to the store as fast as my car could get me there.

Any suggestions where to buy online the cams mentioned?

Yes, it records into Quicktime very easily, although at only 10FPS (I'm sure I can improve on this somewhere, but I'm still learning).
