At the $399 price point, it seems Apple is not catering to college and high school market but rather the working professional with disposable income.

Just check out the commercial. The guy looks like he's in his mid 30's. Compare that to many of the iBook commercials where the main character is in his early to mid 20's.

Perhaps that's why it's so damn expensive.

I guess I'm not very politically correct, but was it really a smart idea to have some Arab-looking guy in your commercial these days?

Hey, he's listening to rock music and dancing and probably from Indiana. A card-carrying member of the Taliban he aint.

Well, seeing as he's not an AK47-toting islamic fundamentalist, I'm sure it wouldn't matter. However, seeing as the advert is being shown in the USA, the automatic, sub-conscious discrimination that comes in to play will undoubtedly have a less than stellar effect on iPod sales.

That, and the unfortunate mix of poor music & atrocious dancing.

Wasn't there a commercial for one of the first gen MP3 players that featured a 30-ish guy vacuuming his house? Seems to me that, indeed, the target audience isn't the teens and college students. It's, um, well, people like me.

Cheers
Scott

PS

For anyone who wonders why you'd need to carry 1000 songs around...I'm running out of space for CDs after buying them since the 80s. My MP3 collection is pushing 2500 right now and I'm not even done ripping them all.

PPS

Anyone want to hazard a guess about how long it'll be before Apple offers a 2 and 3 gig version of this at reduced prices?

Dudes,

Have you seen the size of the display on the iPod?

It has a 4:3 proportion. Hmmm. What else has that proportion? Videos, TV, Cameras, etc?

Why was the name iPod chosen, since it has nothing to do with music? (Think, I know you can.)

Is it possible that the iPod isn't just about music?

DUH!!!!!!

I believe Apple targets different market segments for its various products. The iMac is clearly a consumer machine. The iBook is targeted primarily to the education market. The G4 Powerbook is targeted to the mobile professional. The G4 Tower is targeted to the Graphics professional market. The Cube was targeted to smaller graphics/design shops ... but ended up being picked up by "upscale" consumers such as myself.

I would say that the iPod is targeted to "young urban professional" market. It's a little too expensive for the college set ... but then again so is most anything if you are like I was in college ....broke! So the 21-35 year old working crowd is where this is placed. People who want to take their music with them to the gym, bike riding, rollerblading ... or hook it to their car stereo as a "CD Changer" on steroids.

Viewing the commercial, my immediate reaction was - oh, the target market is idiots! Fortunately that should guarantee the iPod's success.

Dude, according to the commercial, its obvously for handicapped people...excuse me...handicapable people.....the rythmically challenged.

Needless to say, I have one on order.

It will work VERY well as my new CD changer in my car....as well as the gym...as well as on those long as fights overeseas.

You will be mine, oh yes, you will be mine.

My question is will it come with a filter for 80's hair bands? We gotta keep that stuff from propogating. I thought I managed to stamp it out, but damn it, the Europeans are still culturing it over there.

Why? Damn you people! Why? Just let it DIE!
