I left my iPod charger at home, but I do hame my Ti though. the only problem when charging through the Ti, is when I connect the iPod to the computer it is set to automatically update my iPod's music lists...thus it would delete everything.
Is it possible to plug my iPod in without updating its contents, even though it was set to automatic updating?
Please post only things that you have tried here...I do not want to try to plug this puppy in and then be without music, but with a charged iPod for 4 weeks.

thanks

There has got to be some way to charge the iPod, without updating the contents of its music library.
Maybe some keys to hold down wither on the keyboard, or on the iPod....maybe disabling the iTunes helper app....I cannot experience with it, since my music collection is not here...does anyone know the solution?

There is always a solution to every problem.

Hey guys have you tried reading the manual?????
I don't read them also but sometimes it's useful
You can do what you say by changing to manual mode.Connect you iPod and on the left of the iTunes choose iPod.Then hit the options key and choose "manually manage songs and playlists" .
But for doing that you will loose your collection you have now because
by the time you connect your iPod you will start the automatic updating. But by the time you switch to manual mode you won't have to worry again for that sort of thing

But his problem is that as soon as he plugs it in its going to start to sync with the iPod.

One solution is to boot your powerbook in FW target disk mode (boot up holding down the T key). This turns your powerbook into a FireWire hard disk, so the FW ports should be powered. Try plugging in your iPod then and see what happens.

To get out of target disk mode press the power key, and the machine will shut down. I use it all the time, it's a lifesaver.

I don't think you actually have a problem. I'm pretty sure that when the iPod is automatic mode it will only sync with it's main computer. When you plug your iPod into you tiBook it should pop up a dialog asking if you want to make the tiBook your main computer for the iPod. I'm 99% certain that if you plug the iPod into your ti it will not overwrite the music unless you tell it to.

Hello everyone...well, my Ti is my main computer...and it will definitely start updating if I just plug the iPod into it without any kind of tweaking. Hm...

The Firewire target disk mode sounds interesting...I am not sure what that would do, I might try that, but I am still waiting for something that sounds like a doable solution. It might be one long month I will be spending here without any kind of music.

I tried putting the computer to sleep and the pluggin in the iPod...that did nothing. No charging and of course no transfers...
I am sure that there must be some trick that I could do...I might try to plug the iPod in and then instantly putting the computer to sleep...
I wish there was some preferences file that I could like delete, or something that would take that automatic updating out of the iPod...
does anyone know maybe what file is that setting saved to?
Is that saved in the iPod's disk, or is that somewhere on the computer?

Thank you for all the input guys...keep the ideas flowing, we can figure this out I am sure.

I don't think you are being very clear about your problem...

1) you claim the Ti is your primary sync machine
2) you claim when you plug you iPod into the Ti, it will erase all your iPod songs

...

so how is it that your Ti has no songs on it any longer?

I don't have an iPod, but I have a simple idea that might do the trick. Put iTunes in the trash, But DO NOT delete it! No software will run from the trash can. So while it's in there, Plug in your iPod, and hopefully it will charge up fine without updating it. When your done, simply drag iTunes back out the trash.

I just restarted in OS X and it asked if I wanted to change computers. I said no, so it didn't try to sync. The iPod is on the desktop and charging.
Not sure of your "host" situation. You set the update prefs in iTunes. In the iTunes window, select the iPod(on the left with "library", "radio tuner" etc.) and you will see a new option at the bottom that looks like a 'Pod. Clik that and you get the prefs.

I am sorry if my post wasn't clear enough for you. My main machine is the Ti. I use it on the road a lot. I also have an external HD at home, which has a partition with mp3's on it. Thus when i go on the road I leave my external drive behind and just travel with the iPod and the Ti...
Since I left my charger at home I am trying to find ways to charge the iPod without updating the music library on it.

I hope that this will help.

I will try to place iTunes into the Thras and then see what will happen.

if you have any ideas please let me know, I am still lookinf for feedback.

Thank yo everyone...
All you guys have a Merry Christmas

If that's all, just go to iTunes prefs for the iPod and set it for manual updating.
The iPod has to be plugged in and iTunes on, seeing it.You just have to remember to manually dismount(eject or put away) the FW HD side of the iPod before you unplug it.

Do not plug in your iPod hoping that a trashed iTunes will not open. That was my brain storm also 2 days ago and before I could unplug it low and behold a iTunes icon appeared in the dock and all was lost. I did trash iTunes but it did not help. Found a software program that is supposed to remove your mp3's for you but it is just like iTunes. It would have worked but iTunes beat the other program before it could download the mp3's for me. I have lost 865 songs one time and 673 the second. I now have all my mp3's backed up and on my slave drive.

Apple needs to have it where you can access the iPod preferences before it is hooked up.

Your best option is to boot the iPod into Firewire disk mode by reseting the iPod by holding menu + play/pause, then when the Apple logo is showing hold down the |<< and >>| buttons and the iPod will act only as a firewire disk. So when you plug it into the tibook it will only be seen as a disk and iTunes will ignore it.

Here is what I did.
I trashed iTunes, just placed it in the trash. Then I tried opening it from there, and the system said that it cannot open iTunes since it is in the Trash. So I thought I was safe. I plugged my iPod in and waited. In about 2-3 seconds iTunes appeared from nowhere in the Dock and it Launched!
I dragged the iPod icon from the desktop to the Trash pretty quick, then put the system to sleep. I do not know if it updated anything or not.

This morning I forgot that I left the iPod plugged in and I woke the computer up. It mounted the iPod. I got an error from iTunes. It said that since some of the songs cannot be found, iPod will not update. It seems like Apple has built in some kind of a protection for cases like that.
I set the iPod prefs to manual update within iTunes after that.

Now here is the strange part. I went to iTunes, and clicked in the iPod's icon. It said that all my songs were that, I checked the number of songs. I unplugged the iPod and started it up. All my playlists are there, but they contain no or very few songs. Most of the playlists are empty. This is really strange. I cannot listen to playlists. If I go to search by artist or song, everythign is there. But all my set up playlists are gone. This must be some bug.
I know that most of my songs are on my external HD at home. I have some (very few) songs here with my on on of the partitions of the Ti. Checking the iPod's playlist and the songs that I have with me...there are a lot, missing from the playlists. How cmoe the playlists got so messed up? I wish I could update the playlists just with the songs on the iPod, but I do not think that there is a way. I need to get the computer to sync the playlists.

I guess I am OK untill january now. Have a Merry Christmas everyone.
