The Apple documentation suggests that if you do the above, the iPod could lose it's ability to play music. I can't see that it should be a problem, but can anyone confirm this.

I haven't tried it myself, but have heard from others who have. They were left with firewire hard drives that won't play MP3's. I would recommend against it. But, as long as you have the iPod updater/restorer, and all of your MP3's are also on your hard drive you could give it a try. I have a feeling that you would have to do a restore of the iPod afterwards if you want to listen to music.

BTW, is your user name a Kate Bush reference? Love her, and Suspended in Gaffa is one of my favorites.

Read a message that said there is an invisible partition that holds the firmware copy - probably how the update procedure works - uploads the new firmware to the harddrive, you reboot, and then it seems there is a new file to update so it does so.

Anyway, reformatting would mess with this.

I read somewhere about someone who did and it ruined its music playing stuff. They had to send it back to Apple to get it fixed or something. Don't even try, not worth it.

Thanks for the replies.

frazzledglispa: No it's not. My nickname is older than Kate Bush by a long time, but now you mention it, I do see lots of references of that ilk on the net.

Cheers

Gaffa.

BTW. I'm not familiar with the song. In what context does she use Gaffa.
