PowerBook G4 (12 -inch 1.5GHz)
PowerBook G4 (15-inch 1.33GHz, 1.5GHz, or 1.67GHz)
PowerBook G4 (17-inch 1.67GHz)
iMac G5 (17-inch 1.6GHz or 1.8GHz)
iMac G5 (20-inch 1.8GHz)
Mac mini G4

Which model drives is this for? It sounds like it may be for Matsushita drives, but I'm not sure.

EDIT:

MacBidouille.com says it's for the Matsushita UJ-835 series drives.

I wonder if this means there is a region-free patch coming... Useless for me though, since my MacBook has a UJ-857, and my iMac G5 2.0 has a Pioneer K04.

[Davide Guarisco] I was elated to see that Apple released a firwmare update for the slow DVD burning in PowerBooks and mac Mini. It's about a year late, but hey, better late than never.
My Mac Mini suffers from severe disability in handling DVD-R media. Discs that burn at 4x without a problem in a PowerMac G4 Superdrive only burn at 2x in the Matshita UJ-825 single-layer DVD burner of my Mac Mini G4. (Only very few types of DVD-R burn at the spec speed of 4x). This is a well-documented problem.
Unfortunately, the firmware update did not work: "No updatable devices found". Apparently, it only works for the UJ-835 drives. This is silly. Apple, please release a firmware update for those of us who are stuck with an UJ-825 drive!

[Wheat Williams] My Mac Mini with 1.25GHz G4 came from the factory with a Matshita UJ-845C DVD-R drive, firmware revision DPP9.
The SuperDrive Firmware Update v2.0, when run, indicates that there is no SuperDrive on my Mac that requires this update.
Yet the documentation states that the firmware update is compatible with DVD drives in Mac Mini G4s. Do I need a firmware update, or not?

Was it supposed to speed up DVD burning, too ?
I applied the patch, and it worked. But my mini still burns DVD at 1x speed. Sucks.

Try different media. Apple media is the safest, but Taiyo Yuden is a good bet.

I'll try that. Thanks.
