i don't have my ipod in automatic update mode - my ideal situation is to have all my music on the ipod, thus freeing up muchly needed space on my ibook. i've noticed that when the ipod is connected and not in automatic mode, i'm able to actually play music off the ipod while it's connected, as if the files were on my hard drive.

forgive me if this is obvious or a stupid question, but is this okay for the ipod? i have no idea, and i couldn't find anything in the documentation. any ideas?
