Hi Everyone,

Any of you tried the "new" UMAX ASTRA MX3 USB scanner? I am thinking of getting it since my AGFA SNAPSCAN 1212u scans like crap and a strange stain is now under the glass( I took the scanner apart and fixed it/wiped it) I figure I got my $60 worth out of this SNAPSCAN but it's time to move up, the constant dust and bad image quality is really annoying! This MX3 looks pretty good but has a higher price tag?

Any input from the community at large?

Thanks,

JOHN JACKSON

Have a look at the Epson Perfection 610. I have had Umax, Microtek, and Cannon scanners. The Epson produces better scan quality, faster scans, less noise. Good basic software, around $150.

Thanks for the info. But, Have you owned this exact scanner? Or just another in the Umax family and that is where your opinion is coming from?

I have owned 2 Umax scanners, their software is buggy, and the scanners produce at best, average results. Both Umax scanners were very loud, like a grinding noise when scanning. So in regards to your question, I have not owned this particular model, just speaking from past experiences. I have been extremely happy with my Epson scanner.

I have the mx3 scanner and am very happy with it. Although I don't professionally scan items, it scans my photos and documents for faxing very well and it makes NO grinding noise. Try it yourself. By this I mean find a place where you can buy it and if you're not satisfied within 30 days, return it. I for one, am happy. The ONLY thing I don't like is that Ihave to manually turn off the lamp via a controlstrip module. Otherwise the lamp is on for 5 minutes (on startup) then shuts off automatically.

Allright guys, I Just purchased the Epson 1200U and it seems to be working fine, BUT I noticed a small piece of dust/crap under the glass and it makes me kinda mad that my new scanner came out of the box imperfect. Bugs Bunny- You are right it scans great, i decided to get the 1200 instead of the 610 because of the 1200x2400 the 1200u offered. Was that silly??

I have an MX3. It's a decent scanner for the money, if a bit slow imo. The software is also a bit screwy, the control strip kept crashing my Mac (version 3.6.1, haven't tried 3.7).
