My G4/350 running MacOS 9.0.4 locks up when trying to boot with a powered USB hub attached to either of the two USB ports. I have tried two different hubs and the same thing happens... even when there are no devices attached to the hub itself. The "lock up" occurs just as my machine is powering up, before the happy mac icon appears. Unplugging the hub at that point has no effect. No lock up occurs when the devices themselves are attached to the USB ports -- only when the hub is attached.

Any ideas? I'm stumped!

Two quick things you can try:

1. If one of your devices is a USB Zip - disable ALL the Iomega software that came on the CD with the Zip - it will work from the drivers built into the system ROM. Removing this conflict may eliminate your hub problem.

2. Another possible workaround is to shut down, unplug your hub/devices - then start up. After the Mac has completed starting up - then plug in your hub/devices.

Even if this latter method works, the problem I see is that those USB ports look pretty flimsy and probably wouldn't last thru too many in/out's.

Hope this helps.

You also need to consider what brand and the age of your hub. I had a MacAlly that no matter what OS would not allow the iMac to start up.

Replaced it with an Asante and went to 9.0.4 and experienced no problems. (have printer, scanner and zip connected to hub without trouble.)

Yeah, I'm using a 4-port from MicroConnectors and I've never had a single glitch or problem, even with a CD-RW, floppy drive, printer, & scanner all plugged in & powered on at the same time.
Be happy.

sideline - I just purchased a Keyspan 4port powered hub and had a couple of glitches.
First off, I had to yank out the power supply to get anything to work. And I've had to plug my HP832C printer BACK into my keyboard, which goes direct to port2 on my B&W G3 because it simply didn't work through the hub even though there were no visible signs of a problem. I printed documents, they went to the desktop spooler and *poof* they were gone...
My Zip and Umax scanner work fine with the hub, so it's cool now, but a little disappointing. I wanted to keep the extra keyboard connector open for my occasional need for a joystick.
So does anyone know if the ORDER of the plugging-in of devices matters? I've seen some "upstream" vs. "downstream" references scattered around, but I haven't delved into it.
