I'll be receiving a Lacie 300gb d2 external hard drive tomorrow. I have the 100gb upgraded HD in my powerbook, so I believe it's slower than the Lacie external. I use photoshop to work on photos, and would like to use the Lacie hd as a scratch disk. How do I set this up? Will I need to partition the Lacie hd? I will be using fw800, so it should run pretty smoothly (and quickly) right?
I'm not planning to boot off the external hd, but just to use it for storage and as a scratch disk. I think 2-3gb would be more than enough for a scratch disk correct? I understand I have to change some settings in photoshop as well. I run CS2.
Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

If you work with large CMYK files then 2-3 GB will not be enough for a scratch disk. You can partition it if you like, in which case just select the appropriate partition in Photoshop's preferences (you can choose up to 4 scratch disks).

I work with 8-10MB RAW files. I don't print often, and when I do, they are usually 4x6's. Guess I need to figure out how to use this external and create a partition. I'm wondering if I should also allow boot up from the external. It would make my powerbook run a lot faster right?

Macola, I partitioned my LaCie drive into 2 partitions. One is about 20gb or so, the other 250gb. In photoshop, my first scratch disk is the "Start up" drive and my 2nd scratch disk is the 20gb partitioned drive. How do I know if the scratch disk is working?

You should change the order...the idea is to avoid using your startup disk as a scratch disk unless absolutely needed. You probably won't be able to tell unless you are working with huge files and you can see the disk activity light flickering (or hear it).

Oops, thanks for the help Macola. Geez, I wasted 20gb+ on a partition that I probably wont be using too often! Yikes!

BTW, if I use the external as a scratch disk, could I lower the amount of ram used by photoshop? I currently have it set to use 1 gig of my ram, and I'm running on 1.5 gigs of ram.
