I've heard that a firmware update exists for a USB Sony CRX100E CDRW and it allows the drive to write 80 minute CD's. I have emailed Sony at least twice with no response. Has anyone found this update?

I have a Sony Spressa USB (the first generation) and i can write 80 minutes cd with it, without upgrade. I try with discribe and Toast 4.1 and they run fine. I use the 80 min. HiSpace CDR.

Ok i have 2 answer; one from the Sony Website, and one from Sony Technical Support:

Sony Web site:

The drive is capable of recording a maximum of 78 minutes and 30 secondsn of audio files. (686 Megs)

Sony Helpdesk:

Sony doesn't support 80 minute media. Please visit our new website www.sony.storagesupport.com. Thank you for contacting Sony Technical
Support. Please include previous emails so we may better assist you.

Bobbie
Sony Technical Support

I'm very unhappy with this drive...don't buy it if you want to burn 80 minute CD >:-(

I read somewhere (Although I forgot where!) that most drives can write onto 80 minute CD's, but for audio only. In other words, you can't write more than 650Mb of data to a disk.

I have a QPS FireWire drive & Toast 4.1 deluxe, and I must admit that I have not tried to record more than 650Mb of data onto an 80 minute CD. Although I can burn well over 74 minutes of audio onto an 80 minute CD with no problems at all.

The maximum size for Sony CD-RW drive for audio size is 78 min. 30 s (686 Megs). I can burn CD below this Size on 80 minutes CD. But if i try to burn a 693 Megs file...the burn fail when the software try to finish the session.

They don't specified this on the box...its very frustating to buy a drive with no support for 80 minutes CD!!! And the technical support from Sony is very POOR!!! I don't recommend this drive...buy another brand name...maybe the ZIP CD is better...
