Just remember to do a clic in the name of the burner being shown at the bottom of the Toast's window, so you can switch burners.

what I was asking is that if don't have toast, Mac's internal burn capabilities -- how would you burn from an external:
says file, burn folder-- does not seem robust enough to choose an external.

My external Plextor CD/DVD writer is supported natively in Tiger. I never burn from Finder, so I don't know if it would just see that burner and use it or not. But I do know that iTunes, Disk Utility etc. all see it and can burn to it just fine.

Yes, you can burn in the Finder with an external burner. You don't need to tell the Finder what drive to use—instead, insert a blank CD and it will appear on the Desktop, allowing you to burn it.

funny one of my externals it will show up on desktop, but other right now does not, anyway, then what do you do? with toast you drag it into a window. Finder, it offers you burn folder, which I don't get.

You put the stuff you want to burn in to the burn folder (drag & drop).
Then, burn away. Several ways to activate the burn...

-Right click, choose burn.
-Drag towards trash, becomes a "burn" icon. Drop it there.
-File -> Burn
-Open the burn folder. There will be a button in the upper right corner that says, "burn."

Make sure that OS X doesn't nuke the file dates. It may want to change all of the file dates to today.
He can be fixed -- you can't.
