I recently had a friend convert from a PC to MBP. I told him that almost a the peripheral devices just plug into the computer and just work. Well today he bought a HP Officejet 5610, which when plugged in and prints just fine however the scanner is not recognized. So he put the cd that came with the package in - and it was spit back out - repeatedly. So I thought that maybe it was an older version in PPC. HP site does have the drivers for os X but I think that it is PPC. Does anyone know if I dl this version down will it enable the scanner even though it is a PPC version ? will I look like a fool after convincing him to go with a Mac?

Does rosetta also work on drivers ?

Not an uncommon problem... my parents LaserJet 3200 all-in-one may as well be a stone with their Intel iMac - it won't even print (yes, I've tried every third party beta driver I can find).

I feel bad, because I should have done more research before switching them rather than buying into Apple's "it just works" and "no hunting for drivers" claims.

I have a MacBook and the HP 5610 works completely trouble-free. In fact, the software that HP provides is very, very good. I am pleasantly surprised at the quality of the supplied software. It's PPC based yet it all works fine using Rosetta.

If the CD is spitting out, it sounds like it might be physically damaged. I had no problems whatsoever. Just make sure to follow the steps in the pamphlet HP supplies. They say to insert the CD, plug in the USB cable and then run the installer.

Hey how did you manage that?! I just can't get this thing to scan! It keeps saying the program performed an unexpected operation and needs to restart. I pegged it as a PPC-Intel thing, but if you got it working, I want to use it too!

I really don't know what to tell you. Everything just worked fine from the git-go.

Try creating another user and see if it works under that account. At least that would tell you something hosed under the other user account and is not system-wide.

Just as an update - Both the PPC version and the recent Intel native version(!) (6/2006) driver package works fine. However, there is one slight problem: the 5610 cant do wireless (i.e. USB plugged into the airport express USB port) printing. The PB recognizes it on the AE via bonjour but I get the dreaded error -xxxx, when I try to add the printer connected via bonjour in printer setup. Anyone know if there is 3rd party app to plug this last bug?

Thanks for all your replies.
