Is the iPod potentially modular?

Before the release of the iPod there were dozens of threads around regarding what the device would be and how it would operate. Although I think the iPod is way cool (although I don't think I'll get one, no money) there seem to be a whole slew of ideas coming up as to what it could have been or how it could have been better...
My question is this:
Is it conceivable that the iPod could be modular? Consider... It's got a firewire port on it, which could be used for connectivity, and the firmware is upgradable, offering system changes. Someone could make a little device that plugs into the iPod, thus expanding it a little into who knows what...
(Just a thought, hope this is a retreaded thread.)

Whoa! I'm asking! I don't know if it's possible, I imagine it would though. Think about it. Other IEEE 1394 devices talk back and forth to our macs, why not something to an iPod?
Don't bite my head off because I had an idea.. what's up with that?

right on.. who knows what they can expand this thing into. imagine plugging a thing into and giving it a microphone for voice recording, a wireless modem, a, um, canopener, gps, digital camera, etc.. the potential is there

I agree, a digital wallet does not seem unreasonable. It would definitly fit in with the 'digital hub' thing that apple is going for, but to take this thread to the extreme, why not a voice activated PDA? Just add a mic and some voice recognition software for input. What do you guys say, Is it impossible?

Why not a firewire CD burner? It's got 1000 MP3s stored on it, why not order them into a playlist how you want and use the iPod to burn the disc.

for whatever its worth a friend of mine at a company that makes mac peripherals said they are looking into making a receiver that plugs into the firewire port as a rubberized antannea that lets the ipod tune in that new satellite radio, but they cant get the proper specs from apple and are having some trouble figuring out how to engineer it.

This looks like it may be a reality at some point. In diagnostic mode there's something about a burner listed. So far no one's had any results just plugging it into random FireWire burners, but theoretically the support is there.

From the original iPod FAQ sheet (not the current one, for some reason):
Q. Can I use FireWire mode with noncomputer products?
A. Yes. First you will need to reset your iPod. When the Apple logo appears on the screen, hold down the Previous/Rewind button and the Next/Fast-forward button simultaneously until the FireWire icon appears. When you finish using iPod in this “forced” FireWire mode, disconnect and reset it again before normal operation.
What "noncomputer products"?
