In the future could Apple release firmware upgrades that could expand the iPod's capability with regard to what formats it can play? Like in the future is *.mycoolformat became the standard could apple make the iPod play it using a firmware update.
I suppose what i'm asking is - is iPod future proof?

I've read that the BIOS is upgradable. But frankly, I'm not sure what the implications are.

In a device like iPod, wouldn't the MPEG decoding be done in hardware? If that's the case, it doesn't matter if the thing is flashable, because it wont be fast enough to do software decoding of a new whiz bang format?

Check out Apple's web site...they have posted a FAQ that clearly states, "Upgradeable firmware enables support for future audio formats..."

The decoding is done with a DSP, which can use different routines to decode different formats. Now if they supported Monkey Audio, that would be excellent
