is it possible to use the iPod as a portable recording device? I'm not sure if the ROM supports any encoding.. and the only ports seem to be FW and the headphone jack.
People say I'm strange, but that's just because their brains smell like bacon.

Got to play with an iPod today at the Columbus Apple Store. There's currently no way to have voice input into the device. Maybe with Rev. B, but not currently.

But after seeing one in person, I sure do want one!

That would suck if they came out with REV B. and it had all these good features and it left the people that were early adopters out in the cold and that actually gave a reason for them to make another version

that would be nut sucking-astic

My thoughts exactly. We pay $400 and a new model comes out with features like digital recording (and application support, peripherals through the Firewire port, 10 gig hard drive, price drops, etc.).

When I first started reading about the iPod I was completely hoping that it would have a little built in mic for notes and such....I totally would get one if that were the case.

I played with one today in Chicago, VERY NICE!! 5 gig HD makes it totally worth the money. Now if I only had the money.

Nothings ever easy for me so I figure out how to do thnigs like this. You can always record with another device (ibook) and then input the MP3 or whatever. Its a pain in the arse but hey, what isnt!!!

Wish I could get one.

But wouldn't that be exactly what computer manufacturers do? My iBook is less than a year old, but a "better" one just came out...

I'm betting by MWSF there'll be a revision...

Price drops all the time.

If you always wait for the next price drop, you might as well not buy anything and wait forever.

Recording sure would be the next step and who cares if it comes out in rev. B in a couple of months. That is what we want! Steady improvement in all product lines.

In the minidisc thread someone was saying that the iPod couldn't record unless it had a second 1/8" port for input. Is that true? My old cassette recorder could output from a handmic so why not the other way around with digital circuitry?

To figure out where Apple may go in digital appliance land, I look at the iBook homepage and see the devices at the ends of the "spokes" and it is funny to not see an iPod in the graphic yet. There also is no audio input devices either though.

It is possible to record digitally via firewire.

I don't think the iPod will support this though - at least not yet. This is a very high-end solution that is only really becoming available now.

You can see a firewire based audio solution here:
http://www.motu.com/

I must say, that it would be awesome to be able to record audio onto the iPod

I hope Apple doesnt release a rev b iPod until at least MWNY, as otherwise you would get alot of pissed of customers who bought a 400 dollar toy which was obsolete in a couple of months.

I think we will see Steve releasing updates to the iPod at events, ala "now iPod can download your digital photos out on the field" etc, and will all be upgradable via the firmware.

I know there are plenty of USB mics, I'm sure some third party company would be able to construct a little mic that attached via the firewire and saved the data as aiff onto the pod.
