Hi,

I looking for a 9pin D-type connector serial port for my iBook (ie - standard windows com port connector). I need this as I often connect to linux machines which send their console output to the com port. This can be picked up with any dumb console software like HyperTerminal in wondows. However I want a Mac solution so I can do this on my iBook.
Does anybody know of anything like this for the Mac?
I know Belkin & Keyspan do USB-->Serial adapters, but they have mini-DIN connectors. These may still work. But is there any console like software for MacOSX similar to hyperterminal for windows?

Thanks

Paul

Hi, I do the same thing you're looking to do. I use a Keyspan PDA Adapter which is a USB to the 9 pin serial port you are looking for. Here is a link:
http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/PDAadapter/

Don't let the PDA name fool you, this is a real standard serial port - i use it for everything. (it also works on Mac OS 9 and below and Mac OS X)

A for terminal software, get zterm, its the best Macs have out right now. It also works on Mac OS 9 and below and Mac OS X. Go to versiontracker.com to dl it. (bonus: it's freeware)

If you have any other questions, just email me at

timmerk at tcimet.net

Hi,

I would also recommend the keyspan PDA adapter. I use it in
conjunction with Zterm (http://homepage.mac.com/dalverson/zterm/)
to connect to the serial console of cisco's and suns.

This adapter is reasonably priced (~ $40) and is supported under
MacOS 10.1 and 9. If you are using it under MacOS 10.1 make sure
to download the carbonized Zterm and the latest drivers from
Keyspan.

Ranga, how did you configure ZTerm. I have the adapter and software, but it doesn't work. I select the USB port with the Keyspan software.

Hi,

As far as I know there are two ways to configure Zterm to use the
keyspan adapter:

1. Hold down shift while Zterm is starting up.

This gives you a little window where you can choose the serial
port to use. If the keyspan is detected then it should be available
as one of the choices. Just select the keyspan and click 'OK'.

2. After Zterm has started, Select 'Modem Preferences...' from the
'Settings Menu'.

The settings window should have a drop down box at the top
that lists all the available serial ports. The keyspan adapter
should be one of these. Just select the keyspan and click 'OK'.

You need to have your keyspan adapter plugged in before launching
Zterm. You also need to reboot after installing the MacOS X driver
(the installer says that it will reboot, but it never did on my system).

HTH,
