I have two Maxtor's (40gb, 7200) connected a TurboMax ATA/66 card, each on it's on bus (all this in a G4/400)

Anyway, one of the drives disappeared from the desktop, I thought I might have accidentally thrown in the garbage (unmount), but the system would have asked me if that is what I wanted to do, so that couldn't be it. About the same time I heard one of the drive some a stop sound, or a clunk like sound, but I'm not sure why that would happen.

Then I restarted and still wouldn't appear. So I started from my Nortons CD, it found it, but it appeared in the disk doctor dialog box as "unrecognized disk" I then hit the "examine" button and it started checking the disk, but it stop and said it could not continue because of a major problem. I think it said Major Block Directory problem, I then loaded up Diskwarrior and it would not mount it all, actually didn't even see it.

I know Disk warrior is the more capable one, but how can I mount the drive so DiskWarrior can repair it?

There is data, that I'd like to keep, but if it's necessary formatting is the only option I have.

Come to think of it, not even Drive Setup would see it.

If anyone can help, I really appreciate it.

Sounds like the drive failed. The clunk sound you heard may have been the drive heads parking on the platters for good! I don't know how old the drive is, but if it is still under warranty you may be able to get it replaced. As for the data on the drive, you may have to send it to a drive specialist to retrieve the data (depending on how important it is to you). The main drive data retrievers I know of would be DriveSavers. I've read some amazing stories of data they have been able to retrieve from drives under more bizarre failure circumstances. But, be prepared to pay the price for said retrieval! Hopefully it is more simple than a complete failure, but it does not sound good. Good luck.

Do you have or know anyone who has FWB Hard Disk ToolKit?
It does a really great job of mounting some problematic drives for inspection & repair.
I actually got it to mount some old Zip cartridges that were formatted on an Apple ][ GS! It's a good utility to add to the arsenal.

Well, got it back, data intact too. Thank God.

Actually what I did was unplug the IDE cable switched the machine on, then off. Plug the IDE cable back in (or is it ATA?) anyway, next startup the drive was there and Disk Warrior was able to see and I replaced the directory, then fired up Nortons just in case and optimized it.

I also did a read/write/verify on the drive with Nortons.

Thank for the suggestions. Had I not been able to recover the drive Maxtor would have replaced since it's well under a year since I purchased it.

Again thank you. This one had me scared.
