I've been looking into replacing my 24x cd drive that came with my computer with a cd-rw drive and am wondering if it's possible. It's just a ide drive so I don't think it should be a problem. I already have a 4x 8xread external scsi burner but would like a better drive since this one is old and gives me a lot of errors. But.....the 24x drive that came built in is a crappy drive, sometimes it's faster copying files from a cd from the 8x burner then the 24x built in drive.
If anyone has done this before can you please let me know and if there are any recommendations i'd appriciate that as well. I know that there are a lot of companies with fast burners but they usually never say if they're mac compatible.
My set up is a desktop G3 233 first generation if that helps any. Thanks for your input!

Probably one of the biggest problems you will run across is if the OS you are running will recognize the new drive. The apple cdrom extension will recongize alot of the drives that are out but it may not recongize the new one you want to replace it. Might want to check with apple to see if it does. If it doesnt you might try the FWB CD Rom toolkit. www.fwb.com
It installes a 3rd party cdrom driver and they have a list of supported drives on their website.
