What is the ideal way to configure my new 60GB HD in order to get maximum performance?

Well it all depends on if you have OSX or are going to put it on the same drive with OS9.
I have OS 9 and OSX on my 20 gig HD. I have it partitioned four ways one for OS9 about 2 GIGs one for OSX about 4 gigs and the left over I divided up in 7 gigs sections. one for games and the other for MP3's.
If I were you and had only that one HD in my system I would give OS9 about 2 gigs, OSX about 20 gigs, Games or apps for OS9 about 20 depending on how big they are then 18 for what ever mabye MP3 if you havr that many
The reason that I would give OS9 such little space ot that Apple will fade it out . OSX should be big so you can have all your apps for OSX on that one partition.
I think you should make all drives HFS+ but I am not sure on that
ne you can check it out on some web pages in with the heading getting ready for OSX .
Well thats just my thoughts

Yes, I use Photoshop a great deal, but no, I don't have any plans to use OS X in the next year or two (I just upgraded from 8.6 for goodness sakes). My main concern is making sure that my large drive does not slow my machine waaaaaaaaaaaaay down....

For Photoshop you want as large a HD partition as possible (prefferably a separate drive, but a partition is OK) of completely contiguous space as a scratch disk. This means that this partition should be used for nothing else; it should be a scratch only (no files, apps or MP3s - nothing). 5 GBs or so would be good. In Photoshop prefs you can then designate this as your scratch disk.
This was the main reason for me to partition my drive.
