If you've read my other posts, you know I'm moving from a Power Computing clone to a spiffy new G4. But all of a sudden my scanner, Zip drive, CD-RW drive, printer, modem, and Palm Pilot no longer have a place to plug in. I'd like to hear creative ideas besides throwing them away.
I know I can buy a SCSI card, and I probably will do that for the CD-RW and scanner. (I'll ditch the Zip.) Do these things have internal ribbon cables as well as external SCSI connectors? Anything I need to know for terminating them besides what I'm probably doing already? And is the $50 SCSI card that Apple sells on the BTO systems okay?
Now, what about the serial devices? Frankly, I was planning to get a new USB printera and use the Apple internal modem. But what about my Palm V?? Surely there must be a way to hook that up without buying a serial/USB adapter? But I called Palm and they knew nothing of a USB cradle. If I have to get one for that, I'll probably keep the printer. (How well do those things work? Any recommendations on brands/types?)

Unfortunately, the USB-Serial adapters for printers and Palm devices are not the same, and generally not compatible. I bought a PalmConnect USB for my Palm III, and it works perfectly, but I have heard equally good reports about Keyspan's USB PDA Adapter, which looks a lot cooler than Palm's device :-) They both cost about $40.
As for the printer, Keyspan's dual serial adapter works well (but again, not with Palm devices or modems). This costs about $70.
So to use all your peripherals, you'd need two adapters. If your printer is an Epson, you could get either Epson's Parallel-USB adapter (or any device of the sort, ca. $40), or the Axis 1440 Parallel-Ethernet adapter if you have a supported model.

I ordered a new G4/450 back in the Fall with the internal SCSI card and have no trouble with my scanner and CD writer. Termination is handled the same way.

I have the BTO SCSI card ($49) which is an Adaptec 2930CU. There were earlier problems with the card and sleep issues...seem to have been resolved.
I have an old 1G Jazz drive attached...works fine.
There apparently is an internal connection as well. I believe, however, that is officially "unsupported" by Apple. However, I think it can be used. You may want to find the appropriate Apple TIL
