I just got a Samsung SyncMaster 770 TFT LCD flat panel...

I have a B&W G3 350 with a 16mb ATI Rage video card, running OS 9.1...

the system font, 10 pt Geneva is very crisp along with fonts like tahoma... but a lot of fonts on the web (text and text in graphics) and in Photoshop have very rigid edges and seem too pixelated.

Anyone else have this problem or is this just me not being used to LCD monitors? It seems harder to do text in Photoshop since it always has a blurry look to it.

If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them... I'd appreciate it if you'd email me at wsphloyd@yahoo.com since I don't get to check these boards very often.

thanks much

Are you running at the native resolution? And there is the auto adjust(far left button) on the monitor, have you used it? I'm using the same monitor, and the text is razor sharp.

Yep, I've done the auto adjust feature and the resolution is at 1280x1024 with millions of colors.

If you wouldn't mind sharing your settings, including the fine and coarse settings, I'd appreciate it.

Like I said... a lot of text is super sharp, but anything that is anti-aliased seems to be blurry or any 12pt arial font and such as well.

thanks again,
Matt

kaz,

The output of your Rage board could be the culprit. They are known for mediocre output that while not bad, is not particularly good either. In my experience, using anything but a digital interface (i.e. DVI) for LCDs seems to negate much of their advantage in sharpness, although even with analog (assuming good output from video card), they can still offer better text than on many CRT monitors.

I use several LCDs, all with DVI, and all produce very sharp text (certainly, you do see the pixels on some fonts, and this ultra-sharpness can take some getting used to if you are new to LCDs) on both aliased and anti-aliased text under OS9.1 and Win2000. The anti-aliasing in OS9.1 and Win2000 doesn't take full advantage of LCDs, but at some point, Apple will probably incorporate some form of subpixel anti-aliasing as MS has done with the XP due later this year.

ken,

thanks for the reply, I appreciate it...

do you have any suggestions for a new video card? After doing some more research, I've found that as you say, the Rage card, could be the culprit.

thanks again,
Matt

770TFT greatest monitor. ever. Except apple 17 and 22 but they use the same samsung screens.

check your cable and try a different display card. I got great results from both a windows2000 dell with GeForce 2 and my PowerBook G3 with Rage 128.

I ran the 17" Samsung 770TFT on my B&W G3 350 with the same video card, 16MB ATI Rage, and never had any problems, so I highly doubt it's your vid card.

bugs,

thanks for the update. If you wouldn't mind, think you could do a screen/window capture of the top part of this forum page (so it shows the "Post New Topic" and "Post Reply" buttons... which are blurry to me) ... and send it to me at wsphloyd@yahoo.com?

That way I'd have something to compare mine to... and then know if it's just me not being used to LCD monitors. I'd really appreciate it

another thing that I forgot to mention which may also give some more idea of my problem... when I highlight text in input boxes (like the one I'm typing in now), there are white pixels around the edges of the text. This happen to you?

thanks much.

I have a Samsung 770TFT monitor and it displays razor sharp text when driven by a G4/400(AGP). However, I don't think that the auto adjust routine gives the best possible image.

My recommendation is to use a graphics program to display about a 50% gray screen on the monitor. Use the coarse picture adjustment to get rid of the interference patterns (alternating bands of light and dark). Then use the fine picture adjustment to obtain a uniform jitter-free image all across the screen. After I did this, the monitor has the sharpest text of any display I have ever seen.

what graphics program do you use to make your whole screen grey? just make a huge screen filling 50% grey graphic in Photoshop?

thanks,
Matt
