Riddler, my experiences (note plural) of the Applestore UK and Irish Express Cargo suggest you will do well to get the LCD before about Wednesday of next week. My last experience saw them manage to spend over a week delivering a poxy Airport card which, when it arrived, turned out to be an Appleworks multi-licence.

Fantastic! I ordered mine yesterday which means, of course, I've ordered everything for my new Mac setup except the computer.

Any dead pixels??? Looks amazing BTW.

That's one beautiful display, Riddler (and your dog is pretty nice too!).
I have a question about the aspect ratio...the standard resolution of the 17" LCD is 1280x1024, correct? This is a 5:4 aspect ratio. How do lower Mac resolutions (1024x768, 800x600, and 640x480) scale down on this display? Since they are 4:3 ratio resolutions, does the monitor compensate by pixel scaling and then putting black borders on the top and bottom, or does it simply use the entire display area and make the screen look stretched vertically?
Thanks, and best wishes with the new display!!

Yo,
Well I'm still really impressed. In answer to the couple of questions:
a. Nope there's not one dead pixel on the screen.
b. The lower resolutions leave a black border top and bottom as default, although the Monitors control panel shows "stretched" resolutions under the "all" menu.
One thing I forgot to mention was that there was software for OS X included on the install CD, it was a pkg file called "MonitorUpdate.pkg"
I've played a fair bit of Quake3 Urban Terror on the display at 1024x768 and am very happy with the quality of the scaled resolutions, this was my main worry when I purchased the display as my Pismo was quite blurry at 800x600.

hey that's awesome! Could I bother to ask you for maybe one more pick? I'm just curious to see exactly how much desktop real estate there is on that screen. Maybe a shot with an open program or two would help. I dunno, but you know what I mean? Macnn.com in a browser window or a page in MS Word?
Thanks for the pics

Does anyone know if DVI connectors on PCs work with the older Apple LCDs with DVI? I ask because PC at home has a GeForce1 with DVI and it would be cool to know it, in conjunction with an ADC-DVI adapter, would work with the 17" LCD...
I guess a more relevant question would be if anyone knows if the nVidia PC Detonator drivers work with Apple LCDs.

Apple's packaging is a work of art, it's worth documenting the whole "out of the box experience" so that any PC user who happens to drop in on this thread see's the care that Apple takes with there products.
As for the downloads folder, I keep the sit files for everything I download then burn the folder to a CD when it hits 640Mb, found it very useful.
Also notice a new game demo called SpaceTripper on my desktop, excellent modern take on a mix of old classics, well worth the download (they're working on an OS X version too)

Dr Bott sells a product called DVI-ator (US$150) which will enable this monitor to be connected to an older G3/G4 with DVI.
Has anyone seen this adapter in use... does it work well? Are there DVI extension cables available?

That was a real treat, thanks.
I have another shot I would like to ask you to get maby like unreal or quake game shot? I think it would be great to show people the clarity of an lcd displaying a good game (especially with the new nvidia card you have in there).
BTW what kind of camera did you use to make the shots they were of very good quality.

Instead of scaling the resolution down to 1024x768 which I imagine still causes some compromise in image quality can you just not display the extra pixels. What I mean is can you just have a black border going around all corners so that you can run the display at true 1024x768.

Yo all.
Glad you all appreciate the pic's, I remember the days when I was stuck with an LC and was lusting after and 8100/110, always wondered what it would be like to own the latest kit, figured I'd share the experience
The camera used was a Sony DSC-P1 - it kicks butt, I actually thought the pic's came out a bit crappy compared to some others I've seen it produce.
I'll take a pic of it running Quake3 Urban Terror at 1024x768 and the native 1280x1024 in about 4 hours...
As for the Microsoft mouse, well if there were any decent computer retailers in the UK where you could actually go and look at a huge selection of mice I probably would have got a logitech... I was lucky enough to visit a couple of Fry's stores in the US in January...heaven man, you Americans are so lucky

Some screenshots of Quake3 Urban Terror running at 1024x768 High Quality as requested. I'm not one of these guys who likes to spend half his life tweaking settings to get an extra 2fps out of Quake3 so this is pretty much the standard config.cfg (marks on walls on etc etc).
UT Streets Shot 1
UT Streets Shot 2
These shots were taken with Q3(1.27g) running in MacOS 9, the Mac config is a G4 533DP/640Mb/Geforce3(v2.1 Drivers)
I would not read much into the frame rates as:
a. I had 6 bots running (opps, forgot about them)
b. It was the defalut config with ejecting brass etc on
c. These Nvidia drivers are *rough*
If your wondering how the new OS X version runs well, I haven't done any tests but I'd say it's added at least 30fps at this config running at 90-100fps.
Now remember the OS X/OS 9 Nvidia drivers have not been updated to take advantage of the Geforce3, I think they just got some drivers out the door that worked. I'm looking forward to the Nvidia Anit Aliasing when it eventually emerges....

I went to a CompUSA here in the US and an Apple rep told me that the 17-inch LCD Apple Studio Displays were only released to UK retailers which is kinda weird considering Apple is headquartered in the US. I wonder when they'll be released to US retailers so we Americans can get our hands on them.
End of line.

I just got my 17" LCD in today and I noticed that it has some mold lines on the top corners of the clear part that at first I thought were cracks until I saw identical lines on the other side.
Has anyone else noticed these lines? They're not all that noticeable, being they're on the back side, not as bad as the notorious cube mold lines.
My DP G4 hasn't made it here yet, so I can't comment on the image quality.

MChieh: The UK retailer line can't be entirely true; I saw one at a store in Chicago just a couple of days ago.
GuruMeditation: Yeah, I noticed the line on the upper left corner of mine, and have now seen the upper right. They aren't noticeable unless you're looking top-down on the unit fairly closely, or are running your fingernail along the top for some reason, methinks.
All: I offer some pictures.

Well, if anyone else in the US (or better yet, Dallas) spots one of these in a CompUSA, Fry's or Micro Center, please let me know by e-mail.
Thanks in advance.

I just found a buyer for my ancient 15" Apple monitor and decided to buy the 17" LCD from Apple. I ordered it Thursday (said 7 days on the site) and I got it today (Tuesday!!!!!).
First impressions before turning on was that it looked nice, good size (although not wide screen). After turning it on however, I can not believe the native resolution for this thing!!! It's higher res than my LaCie Electon 22 Blue I use at work!!
Nice job Apple!
