I currently have a 15" Apple flat screen monitor which is nice (but not as sharp as a CRT).I'm thinking about buying a new monitor.
The Apple 17" is a possibility, although it seems like there are 19" non-Apple monitors for a similar price. I don't need anything larger than a 19" monitor.
Any suggestions?
Any monitors to avoid?
How does one compare monitor anyway? (A visual store comparison seems sort of limited an cannot tell you anything about conflicts with hardware).
Thanks

You might want to try one of he IFT or NF models from Samsung. All are reasonable in price, and look great. The 900NF is quite a nice monitor. Personally, I wouldn't buy a KDS or a Daytek. I hope that helps.

I have a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 900u (it's a 19 inch). I adore it. The picture is wonderful (not good, WONDERFUL, and I am very picky when it comes to screens), and it has a built-in USB hub. Definitely worth checking out.

i have to agree with Kbee, check out the samsung IFT's. i got a 700IFT (17") for my G4/450. the flat CRT is very crisp, with great resolution and refresh rates. and it is completely compatible, comes with mac software for calibrating color. the 900IFT is the 19" version, and i believe it costs a lot less than Apple's 17".

I, too, am looking for recommendations on monitors. I just ordered a G4, but cannot afford Apple monitors. I am looking specifically at 19" monitors and will be using primarily Photoshop and other graphics applications. I have seen the suggestion to look at monitors in retail outlets, but it's impossible to judge between them because the calibration is not the same between monitors, some monitors look like they have been on the floor for some time, etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the advice.
The Mistubishi Pro 900u sounds great but is a bit too pricey. Is the screen significantly better than the Plus (91e) line?
Also, the Apple 17" monitor uses a diamontron tube...is it equivalent to a Mistubishi plus or pro line?
In terms of Samsung, I can't tell the difference between the IFT and NF. I think there is a 950P too.
Anyone with experience with Princeton Graphics? In 1998, Macoworld gave the E090 a great review. They haven't re-reviewed these monitors more recently.
Thanks.

The NF is a higher quality picutre than the IFT, it also has a flatter tube. Oddly enough, I belive the IFT and NF 19's are priced the same. If you are looking fo a 17 get the IFT, 19 IFT or NF will do, which ever you can find, dependin on price of course.
Good Luck

I ordered the Diamond Pro 900u a few months ago, and I hated it. It had poor geometry, a wobbly image and poor convergance. So I returned it and got anothe 900u. This one was the exact same - it sucked. So I finally ordered a Sony 19" flatscreen CRT (the G400), and I love it. It doesn't wobble, and has much better convergance, not to mention sharper text. I was using a G4, so it wasn't the video card causing these problems.
I have heard so many good things about the 900u, and I don't know why. I don't think I got 2 bad units, but tthen again, who knows...

I have a NEC MultiSync XE21 (21 inch) monitor. It's been on 12-16 hours a day almost every day for five years. And it's still the best monitor I've ever seen.
My husband has a NEC MultiSync 3V (15") that is 7 or 8 years old. Still sharp, still going strong.
I can unreservedly recommend a NEC product...
I also have a ViewSonic VP150 LCD monitor as my second screen. The image on these flat panels is sharper than any CRT I've ever seen, once the video geometry is set...
And my two best friends with Macs both have ViewSonic CRTs, one a 17" and one a 19", crystal clear and reliable.
It's almost impossible to judge monitors in wall at a superstore because they're almost always run on a Windows machine...
Good luck.

I read a bunch of customer reviews at Onvia.com re:Mistubishi 900u. Several people mentioned convergence and wobbly line issues. Those that didn't have the problem loved the monitor.
Some people loved the Viewsonic, others hated the color.
Macworld gave a Princeton monitor a great review back in 1998 (I haven't seen anything newer).

I would recommend anything by ViewSonic...I have never had any problems with them and my most demanding customer finally bought one and has never complained since. They are a bit more expensive than the competition however.
I also have nothing but good things to say about the Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 710 (17"). Beautiful displays and good price.

Buy one of those Apple Cinema Displays. I have one on my G4 and its absolutely brilliant. It makes my 21" CRT monitor (sitting next to it) look tiny and blurry.
**** the price, its worth it.

If price is a factor, do consider please what PC magazine rated the best sub $1000 19" CRT just a few months ago. This model, the MAG Innovision 800V was my choice to compliment my new G4 and I absolutely LOVE it! I was able to snag this puppy for just under $350.00 shortly after PC magazine published the article. Wonderful on-screen controls, all of which, can be managed with a single round controller. This display simply Rocks! If only it came in charcoal/graphite ;=)
