can I buy off the shelf PC HDs for my Mac?

Can I buy any off the shelf PC hard drives from places like Staples and Best Buy and have it recognized by my mac when I install it? I have a Beige G3 Rev. A, I think it supported IDE drives. What type of hard drive should I buy if I want to replace the original drive?

yes you can buy off the shelf hard drives.
The following brands work fine:
IBM
Maxtor
Western Digital

I would recommend Western Digital over the other brands. I have always had maximum perfromance from them. Whereas I have nothing against the Maxtor or IBM, WD puts the Mac OS symbol on it's packaging, and I believe when a manufacturer does that it needs to be rewarded.
