I got myself an iSub since the Apple Store has them for half the price right now (swiss apple store). I knew it would only run on slot loading iMacs. And I also knew i dont have one.
So I have my iSub in parts with the electronics hooked to my cube. I dont have to say that i dont get sound
While there is an easy way to equip the Cube Speakers or just about any Mac with an iSub (no longer usb audio then), I would prefer to hook that isub digitally to my mac. But not the slot-in iMac.
I can order a standard USB audio device and design a schematic that i can hook it up to my USB mac running 9.0.4 or later. But thats too much work for me (and a later project).
Mac OS only supports one Audio Device on the USB bus, btw.
These are the thing I could need help on:
[*]Anyone got the iSub to run with something other than a Slot-in, > 350 Mhz iMac?[*]anyone read out the EEPROM? (OK, prolly not...)[*]it seems the MacOS is preventing the sounding of the iSub, not the iSub itself.[*]when I remove the EEPROM, its no longer a H-K product but a Philips USB Audio device (Philips chips used). When doing so, i get a distorted sound, very weak, and the Cube would recognize it as generic USB audio device (output).[*]How would I proceed to read out a serial EEPROM with a Mac? On a PC, what Software would i use?
The USB DAC in the iSub has means to controll mute, volume, de-emphasis, treble, bass, dynamic bass boost.
You can also peek me via ICQ 6480118 or email anunnaki(at)freesurf.ch

How would I equip my Cube, lets say, with the original spherical speakers and an iSub??
That would be really cool!!!!!!

It seems the MacOS is blocking USB audio streaming to the iSub as soon as it registers with the USB Interface.
If I remove the EEPROM, the iSub is just a Philips AUdio device and gets sound. The bad thing is it is destorted. Very likely that the EEPROM has also certain sound settings that need to be set.
The easy way for the cube is to hook the iSub to the Pro Speakers interface. This is mostly easily done in analog by connecting the iSub between the output of the USB chip and the input of the digital amplifier. You might want to add a decoupler inbetween and very likely a volume control would be convenient.
Sorry for the lack of details, but my idea is that if you are familiar enough with electronics as you could solder around in you mac, you will understand what you will need.
Oh, BTW, you will have to open the USB Amp Case of the Cube to get access. But its not even half as hard to krack than the mouse.
Just consider the price difference between iSub and SoundSticks before you choose one ;-)

OS 9 CAN support 2, even 3 usb Audio o/p !!!
Try it yourself, you need 2 or more usb audio output device.
1. play a mp3 with your cube speaker w/ itune (build-in)
2. while the mp3 is still playing, open QT
3. open apple menu -> control panel -> sound
4. Output -> ubs o/p -> ok
5. play a movie in QT
6. Now, cube speaker is playing mp3; usb speaker is playing movie sound.
Actually, you can play 3 mp3s in different itune window w/ 3 diff usb speaker at the same time. All you have to do is switch the 'sound panel' with different o/p before the mp3 is played.
I have a cube and iMic, and borrow an isub from my friend. All 3 can play at the same time.
I did a simliar thing to ibook, both build-in speaker and cube speaker/imic can play together. (cube speaker needs more power than ibook usb port can give)
IF someone out here can hack the os sound panel and let us to choose 2/3 sound o/p at the same time, everyone can use the isub, or even 3 channel sound from 3 set of usb speaker.
