i am having the strangest monitor sync problem i have ever seen.

got a used supermac 19" monitor, identical to one i had once owned. couldn't get it to sync up with one of the PowerMac 9500's on my network. tried 2 different video cards, several adapters, the video cards in different PCI slots, zapping the pram... no matter what i did, moving colored horizontal lines is all i could get.

i swapped out the monitor with the used mac dealer. same result.

no matter which video card, which card slot, which monitor cable, no go. detached all other peripherals, even tried a different keyboard, mouse and power strip. when that didn't work, i tried moving the machine to a different location. nothing worked.

reattached the monitor that had been used with this 9500 earlier, which is now in use with this g3 (so i know it works). SAME horizontal lines, even though i didn't change a thing other than using it with a different cpu for a while.

so i figured it must be something in the machine although it had worked fine earlier. i grabbed an identical 9500 to see if i could get it to sync. nope, SAME THING!

now we are talking a third video card, 3 different monitors, a different cpu, several different card slots, several video adapters at various settings, different monitor cables, no other peripherals, and no matter what i do, i always get the same video noise. there is no reset button or anything on the monitor. i cannot get to any software or OS settings on either 9500 because they simply will not sync with any video setup i try.

i'm out of ideas of things to try, other than fiddling with the infinite number of dipswitch settings possible on these adapters. any idea what i am doing wrong or what i can do???

i have been to http://www.griffintechnology.com/ their online database of monitor specs is a great resource. In fact, Griffin's "Mac Sync" adapter is one of the ones I have, the one they recommend for this monitor. I have tried Griffin's recommended settings for this monitor (1024x768 plus "sync on green" - A7,8 B5,6,7)

also tried:
A7,8 B7 - sync on green settings only
B5,6 - 19/20" color 1024x768 settings only
B3,6 - 640x480 settings, after zapping pram
B4,5 - VGA/SVGA
A7,8 B4,5,7 (recommended on their troubleshoot page)
B3,4,5,6 - 1152x870
A7,8 B3,4,5,6,7 - 1152x870 plus sync on green

the last two settings gave me a somewhat less distorted image but still no sync. I've also written their tech support, no answer yet.

i must stress that i have tried these settings and several others with several other adapters, on two different video cards (some on 3) two 9500's and a RasterOps and Radius monitor as well as the SuperMac, different cables, all without success.

this is too strange. i have used macs since the mid 80's and never seen this before. there has to be something very simple i am overlooking. what could it be???
