I took a warrantied 13 gig out of my DV SE and replaced it with a 40 gig. Then I bought an OWC ext F/W H/D with a 911 chipset. I haven't had the nerve to fire it up for 2 months. Any good guides on how to do this? I have been tentative about trying new stuff ever since I started computing, due to a faulty motherboard in a brand new iMac. I want to use the ext. to back up and organize music and photos. Thanks in advance for any help.

you'll need to format that drive and install a version of mac os on it.
I'd boot from an os x 10.1.x or os 9.x cd-rom and take it from there.
after that, all should work fine.

Is there a good tutorial out there that would guide me through this?

well the question is, do you have the drive installed or do you need to know how to do that?
to do that its just like any other HD install, make sure the jumpers are set to slave, and plug in the ATA cord and the power supply and you are on your way.
If you just want to put some files on it you don't need to put an OS on the disk, just format it with Apples Dick Utility and you are on your way.

It looks as if I have to do a firmware update. The drive enclosure that I bought from OWC doesn't work in anything above 10.0.4. As soon as I hear from them I'll be ready to fire it up. I do want at least OS 10 on the ext. drive, plus maybe a partition for burning. I am just a little gun shy about trying new things, due to a faulty motherboard on a new iMac while I was a newbie. I'm getting braver.

do this first: load an install disc into the imac. you should load the disc before you turn on the mac, which means sticking a paper clip into the tiny hole (provided it has one).
boot from that disc and install the os of your choice. That will get the mac up and running. I'd install os x if that's what you want to run.
after the boot and config is taken care of, I'd turn my attention to the external drive in the enclosure.
you'd be surprised how often stuff just works if you give it a try, even if the manufacturer says it doesn't. I bought some software discs 4 years ago. They wrote on the disc that it wouldn't work with my verison of mac os. well, it worked pretty well, and continues to work with 9.x.
so what I'm saying is (1) install os x on the internal drive by booting from the os x install disc, (2) configure the system as you want, and apply all os x updates, all the way up to 10.1.5, and then (3) plug in that firewire drive and see what happens.
