Will an Apple GeForce2 pulled from a 4X slot work in a machine with a 2X AGP slot? Some say yes, others tell me there's not enough power in the 2X slot and using the card could damage my motherboard. One of the guys at my local MUG told me the following...and I tend to take his word on almost everything. Is this true?

The power requirements exceed the AGP specs but machines with a 4X AGP slot or later were designed to provide enough. Any older machines won't be able to drive enough power and might damage the motherboard if you try.

i've also heard about some people saying that the geforce cards need more power to run, and wouldn't work well in 2x slots. but i've also heard people who've had success. the question is, what computer are you putting this in? i ask because the advice your friend gave you does ring true. if you are using a pulled apple geforce card (from a recent G4), those motherboards have an extended connector that the card plugs into; this is used to power the ADC port, where the power, USB, and monitor connections are in one cable. so these cards are only compatible with G4's that originally came with a video card with an ADC port.

the guy from your MUG is kinda confusing the 28V needed for ADC and the fact that the geforce 4xAGP cards may need more power to run in 2x slots...but he's on the right track.
