Well, I am living in a country that is 99% PC and the monopoly provider does not give a damn about macs, there modems are only PC and they only support PCs, So I figured I would buy a modem from the net and configure it myself......www.alshamil.net.ae

The modem generally doesn't care a whit about what is on the other end of the cable. Worst case though would ba a USB modem that the computer would need a driver for, modem still couldn't care less though. Ethernet connections are just that and if you have a Mac (that's not ancient) you have ethernet, no extra drivers necessary.

Biggest pain is the PPPoE protocol the computer-modem-provider connection uses(most DSL providers). OS X will do that though. Other options are an Airport base station or a DSL router (w/PPPoE support). It can be done without too much pain.
