I'm just about to buy a 256 MB RAM chip from coastmemory.com for $54. Since they don't post too much info there about the specs of the RAM, I called and talked to a guy who told me it's speed rated at 3-2-2, not the quicker 2-2-2 that most RAM is.

I know that my G4 466 came with 128 MB of RAM from Apple, and I added a 256 MB chip myself later, which was 2-2-2 rated. I checked my Apple System Profiler afterwards and found out that the RAM Apple supplied was 3-2-2 rated, so my 2-2-2 stuff ran at a reduced speed anyway. (though some would say that the difference isn't even noticeable...)

Can some iBook owners check what their profiler says, and tell me if the RAM that is soldered on is 2-2-2 or 3-2-2? Thanks!

I bought my G4 from the apple store. I configured it w/ only 64MB of RAM and got 3 256MB chips from Techworks. All my Techworks RAM is 2-2-2, while the Apple stuff is 3-2-2. This has always kinda bugged me, but I've read that I'd never be able to actually see a difference.
Check to see if the new RAM will be PC100 or PC133 (though it's probably PC100). If it is PC133, I BELIEVE that your system will recognize it as PC100 2-2-2, since it is faster than your system bus anyway.
Check ramseeker.com, memorytogo.com and otherworldcomputing.com for other RAM options. You should be able to get PC100 2-2-2 for about that same price.

222 is not effectively faster under normal use than 322. with the new Apple firmware, your ram must run at 322 speed anyway, so you needn't worry.
i believe apple has always shipped their comps with only 322 speed ram pre-installed.
iBook uses PC100 SDRAM. if you purchased ram labeled as "for iBook," then you don't need to worry about the speed. in any case, faster ram on a slower ram bus will run at whatever speed the bus is clocked to. so if you install PC133 ram in one of the old 100MHz G4s, it will just run at 100MHz, without problems.

Why would the iBook need PC100 RAM if the system bus is 66 MHz?

ASP on my iBook CD-RW says PC100-222S
