The end has been coming for days now, with a noticeable "pop", the screen going teeny, and then, after turning the screen off, my ViewSonic 17" would come back to life. But no luck today!!--just terrible sqwawks and and electronic noises, making fear that a flash of fire wasn't far behind, and *not a thing* on the screen.
My question is, with a 2 year-old G4 500 MHz Sawtooth tower, should I get a new fancy Apple flat screen (for which I would need to get a Dr Bott DVIator or Extendit DVI to ADC) or settle for a *really good* CTR screen. I have no store to go to within 450 miles--so need advice as to what to mail order. Have to use a SCSI card (to run a SCSI scanner) and I think I saw 'somewhere' that it can give problems with a flat screen (is that true?). Help! What should I do?

I am not sure what display you should get, but I have never herd of a SCSI card conflicting with a flat display. Personally I would get a flat panel, but I don' know what position you are in. I have a SGI F180 18.1" flat panel on my mac at home (duel 800) which came with a SCSI card. The display is running off a Gforce 3 and using a ADC to DVI adapter. I have a G3 B&W at work which has a SGI 1600SW 17.3" flat panel display running off a Number Nine Revolution IV card (which I can't get any drivers for, but it still works). The G3 also has a second, 14" flat panel display which is running of a ATI Rage 128 using the VGA port. It also has a SCSI card which currently has a zip 250 on it. Neither of these computers is having any problems (I have used the SCSI card on the G4 in the past, and it worked). I have used 9 & 10 on the G4 and just 10 on the G3. I hope that this helps.

Hey GeneA,
I just bought a new monitor last week from Best Buy. It's a 17in Samtron, I think Samsung makes it. It is awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!! It has a 20 dot pitch, very clear and easy on the eyes.
Best Buy currently has this monitor for $110 dollars after $60 dollars in rebates. I was willing to buy what I like no matter what the cost, but this one really sold me on it's clearity. 20 dot pitch is nice too. Anyway see if you can find it at their web site.

Boy, is this a difficult decision! There is a *huge* difference in $$ outlay!--altho that's not the decider for me, necessarily. I think maybe (how's that for non-commital?), I am leaning toward a good 19" CRT, mostly because I am thinking that color synch and *really* good resolution is still best on a good CRT. Am I right?

The color quality and the ability to switch to different (high quality) resolutions are the two big reasons my new replacement monitor is going to be a CRT. A Sony CPD-G520 in fact: 21", 1600 x 1200 (or higher) @ 85Hz. I have a G500 at work and I love it.

I just switched from a CRT (lacie Electron Blue III) to an Apple 17" LCD...I was a bit worried at first, but have never looked back. Colour wise, LCDs have come a long way...
