(Firewire) Lacie 16x or QPS 16x CDR-W
Does anybody have any exp. with any of these two drives. The are similar in price and functionality. MacMall and MacZone suggested these over other choices. Please advice.
And how long does it take to burn a whole CD?
Will be connected by firewire to a G3 400 DV iMac with OS 9.04. Thanks

Hi Unclej, I don't know much about those two drives. But I CAN tell you how fast they'll record. What the 16X means is that the drive can transfer information, whether files, music or whatever, onto a disk at 16 times the normal play speed (it makes more sense when talking about music). If you had a Beatles CD that was 64 minutes long, it would take you 1/16 th of that time to burn it, or 4 minutes. That's how it works.
I have a drive that maxes out at 8X write (only 4X rewrite). Not as fast, but still just a few minutes. I think if I were going to spend that much money, I would spend a few more bucks and get the new Yamaha drive for 399. Those are the bee's knees.

I personally have the LaCie 161040 firewire drive and have been very pleased. I am using it with my wallstreet using an OrangeMicro OrangeLink cardbus firewire adapter and also using it with my Dell Workstation 420 without difficulty. Haven't made a coaster yet.
Besides last week there was posting on maccentral about QPS shipping their 16x firewire drive and the responses were mainly negative. Most were dissing the drive or Que or both.
So my vote would go with the LaCie. Also very good for support.

Well I just ordered the QPS 16x firewire drive. Hope I didn't make a $300 mistake.
Thanks for you comments!

For those of you who haven't purchased yet, it might be worth trying the Yamaha 16x10x40 CD-RW FireWire drive. I just got one and it has written a disk like a charm! Really fast as well!

Another vote for the Yamaha CRW2100 (16*10*40 drive).
Yamaha are the best.

I have been in the market for a while too and after considerable research, I just ordered the Yamaha as well - it looks to be the best choice (though not the cheapest). I'll let you know....

After much research on the net, I'll have to chime in with the previous posts and suggest a Yamaha. They are expensive but worth it. For less money the Sony Spressa looks like a good bet, and since Powermacs use Sony CDRW, you can be sure that the Mac OS will support the drives. Wherever I look, there is never a shortage of negative comments about Que drives, so I'd stay away from 'em.

I received my QPS 16x on Wednesday, and that night burnt a CD with ease. I never had burnt one prior to that one. I'm very excited about my purchase. I have on burned 2 but feel like I made a good choice.
Thanks,

The Que 16x was just reviewed very favorably at www.cdrlabs.com. I'd be surprised if it has the same compatibility problems that the 12x had - these seem to have been resolved.

I don't know about the prices in the United States, but the Yamaha CRW2100 (16w10rw40r) was one of the cheaper CD-RW drives available at my mail order outlet. Which is just one more reason to buy a Yamaha!

I have the LaCie 12x4x32 and I got it back in augest when it was 400 and now its barrly ussed I've burned about 150 CDs with it and only 3 have been bad. it take about 6 mins for a 80 min CD. I highly recomand the LaCie but wait another month when someone comes out with a 20x or a 24x I've heard it some where, BTW napster is down so you can't be doing that much burning with it anyway.
