I have had a long LONG list of system problems with my G3 Blue and White, and have tried all the usual fixes, from zero out the HD and clean install, to replacing RAM, trash prefs, push CUDA, etc., etc. Recently bought Conflict Catcher 8 and with help of their Tech Support, ruled out extensions conflict. But they suggested removing the two year old Macally iHub USB 4 port hub I was using, and only use my second hub, a one year old Asante Friendlynet 4 port.

Problems have went away for two days. Is this common, or even possible that the hub was causing the problems all this time?

I ran into problems a while back when my hub's "bus-powered/ac adaptor" switch somehow got set to "bus-powered". I had strange booting problems, crashes, restarts when I chose shutdown. They all went away when I switched it back to using it's ac adaptor for power...
