i have a couple questions about my ipod:
1) Sometimes when i connect my refurbished ipod to my G4, the ipod displays a CD (a disk) with an exclamation point. it then proceeds to run a 20 minute check of the disk or something (complete with a progress bar at the bottom). What is it doing?
2) My ipod often takes about 5 seconds to play a song i have chosen. Is this normal?

I have the newest firmware etc.

the first thing you mention is the ipod doing a disk check. i don't know why it would be doing that when you plug it in to your machine, but you can manually start the process by holding back, forward, menu, and the circular button.

about the 5 second delay to play a song, this is normal if it happens to the first of a group of songs since the ipod is loading the songs into memory. it shouldn't be happening to subsequent songs already loaded into memory.
