Okay, this seemed to fix itself today somehow, but it really had me worried for a little while.
I took my iPod out to my car today, plugged it in on my way to church, and I was in an awkward position, so I turned the backlight on (holding down the menu button) It didn't turn on! The screen inverted colors (everything normally black is white and vice-versa) but no backlight... I tried reseting it a couple of times, no go.
Seems to be working fine now though..

Sorry sirCastor but your problem you describe is VERY NORMAL!!!!!!!
It's because of the white lighting of the iPod.When you are on daylight you will have inverted colors.Try this. When you are out on the daylight select with the backlight timer the always on option. Now if you move from outside to someplace inside which the sunlight is on reduced levels you will notice that your backlight works o.k.
It's just the white light.Nothing more. Relax...

For what it's worth mchladek, I was listening to Church hymns
Phobos.. I'll give it a shot, but I've honestly never seen this occur before. Even in the daytime I can see the difference between the white backlight and the normal display and it was simply inverting on a normal display..
Now if you're saying the iPod is sensing when there are lower light levels around and turning on the light.... I think your crazy because that kind of sophistication is neither necessary, nor wanted in the iPod.

Now I'm not crazy.(At least that what I want to believe....)
Offcourse iPod isn't autosensing..... How you even thought about it?
If you'll check what I'm saying don't do it on your appartment or some closed space.Do it OUTDOORS.
It's like a negative. O.k my english are too bad to explain the whole thing so maybe someone more keen on english and not so bored can explain it???

You were right. The direct light just made it too bright to see the white light. (I was being sarcastic about the Autosensing part)
I get ya, now. Thanks for pointing it out.

I've noticed the same thing. Also, if you have the backlight on and you look at the screen from below (your line of sight should be almost parallel to the screen), it'll always be inverted, even in a dark place. And if you look at it from above, it'll be blue. Pretty cool.
