When waking from sleep, the keyboard and mouse on my AGP Graphics PMG4 are frozen until the machine has re-established its connection to my AirPort network; once that happens, the keyboard and mouse instantly unfreeze.

Is there any way to avoid this annoyance? OS X 10.3.9, 896MB RAM, 450MHz processor. I just removed my Belkin PCI USB 2.0 card for troubleshooting purposes, so I now have no PCI cards installed.

Do you have any network resources set up to automatically connect? Or maybe any resources that you're now actively using but don't disconnect from before sleep?

Yes, in fact: AirPort. I think AP may be implicated in the problem because it is not until it finishes reconnecting to the my AP network that it finally gives me control of the mouse and keyboard --- at the very same moment, if the AirPort menu atop the Finder is to be believed.
