i own a lacie 8x4x32x firewire CDRW that i would like to upgrade. it has a matshi.ta drive in it that i would like to pull and replace with a 16x or faster drive. does anyone know if this will work? will the lacie firewire hardware support a different drive or only the particular model(s) it was originally shipped with?

(ha! it's trying to stop me from writing mat****a!)

You should be able to put another cdrw into the firewire enclosure.but I dont know if it needs any changes in the set up or drivers etc.
If you can buy enclosures and hard drives, cdrw's etc and put it together I dont see why you cant replace/upgrade your cdrw

I was wondering the same thing yesterday. I'd like to open my qps firewire and take out its mechanism--all it is (or should be) is an internal IDE CD-RW in a firewire enclosure.

You can get 40x internal burners at best buy and even wal-mart, and I thought about upgrading to one of those.

has anyone successfully replaced a drive in a case not intended for use with a different drive? is there any difference between the firewire case on my lacie burner and an empty case sold by a different company?
