It's summer. It's hot. I'm tired of hard to use sprinkler control boxes. Has someone made a device to hook up our favorite computer to standard sprinklers?

If you find a sprinkler controller that a) doesn't require a licensed plumber to install and b) can be externally programmed by ANY computer, I want to hear about it! My current sprinkler controllers are the epitome of "not easy to program," and I've been programming all sorts of things for years...

There's the Rain 8 but it also requires programming via X10. At lease you can do it from the comfort of your computer...

How much programming of a sprinkler do you want to do? I get by with three clockwork controls that control three links of soak hoses / springklers. The clockwork controllers let you set 1. Frequency 2. length of water being on. I could put more or less as many of these in as I liked. What do you want to do that can't be done this way?

It isn't that I want to do anything fancy. My current solution (a pair of Toro timers) works fine 90% of the time. But the interface for the timers stinks. And here I've got this shiny G5 that I leave on almost all the time.

It looks like I could roll my own solution using X10 automation. But it also looks like the whole thing would cost me about $250 to get everything (beginner's X10 kit, dedicated sprinkler controller, friendly software), and I'm not sure I want to invest that much into this project. Yet.

But if those Toro timers upset me one more time, I might.
