I would like to move my USB printers to the opposite side of the room. How long of a USB cable can I use. That is, what is the maximum cable length I can use with a USB device?

Technically, the longest USB cable you can use is 15'. Of course you can get a USB repeater, or just try an extension cable and expect some data loss.

Would a hub act as a repeater?

Is this a good place for an argument?

I have a 3 com webcam that I wanted to extend into the garage. I bought 3 USB cable extenders from outpost...in total I have about 40 feet of cable...
and the damn thing works like a charm..I was amazed.

Yes, a hub would work as a repeater. I don't know if a non-powered hub will though, so make sure you're using one with an ac power supply.

Only a powered hub will work as a repeater, a non powered hub will not.
But those are a bad idea regardless (non powered USB hubs that is).
