I recently had a 120 GB hard drive die. There wasn't anything important on it, but it got me thinking. Since I've used this second hard drive as a backup in the past, this may not be the best solution going forward. What if my house burns down?

So here's my question. How do I get 40 GB+ of storage space at a remote site for daily (albeit incremental) backups? Most services like .Mac offer 1 GB (or up to 4 GB for an extra $100/year). I need a lot more than that.

Before you ask, I'm storing scanned in photos for my family tree, and I have a LOT of photos. I would also like to back up my own personal photos, music, documents, movies, etc.

Any suggestions? I know I can build a 1 TB server for about $500 and store it at my brother's house, but I'm not too keen on making him foot the energy bill to run it full time.

Dreamhost - 60GB for $16/mo (no referral link)

Use rsync or similar to only copy what has changed.

energy bill? it won't cost that much....

you could burn a bunch on DVD and just put it in your safety deposit box if you have one...

Mainly, you don't need to backup everything everyday... so just back up everything once, put it at your brother's house... then use .mac or something to back up the other stuff here and there.

Dreamhost sounds interesting. Can someone tell me more about what it would take to have my own domain name and web site there too? What software do I need to publish a basic web site (iWeb)?

Register a domain with godaddy(.com), and then walk though the short list of questions in the Dreamhost control panel. The site (web, email, ftp, sql, etc) is up and running within a day (DNS propagation slows it down).
iWeb is sufficient, nvu is another option for editing, and cyberduck is another option for uploading.
