Hello--

I have an Imac 500 g3 running OS 9.1.

My brother printer 1440 has always been picky.. sometimes it wants to print and sometimes it doesn't... much usually a restart will get it going....

But now it only seems to like to print Appleworks.. sometiems word... but it hates Final Draft.

I have another printer that prints everthing fine (it's just slow).

So my assumption is that it's the brother printer and not any of the progrmas. I just download the laster usb driver from their website, but that didn't seem to make it happy.

Would upgrading to 9.2 make it happy? Or maybe make my software happy so it would print?

any tips out there?

thanks.

Matt,

this is a peripherals question more than an iMac question, but I'm going to answer it before I move it.

I have the Brother MFC-8300 which is based on something similar to the 1440, only mine pretends to be a fax/phone/copier as well.

In MacOS 9, it's lousy. It may work, it may not. Mostly, with a few restarts and praying to the right gods, it works.

In OS X, it worked always, once Brother released their 10.1 driver. Ironically, when printing from a Classic application, it never fails to work.

If you have Final Draft 6 and use that and AppleWorks a lot, I would say, move to OS X, where both those software applications have OS X native versions. Otherwise, I don't know what you'll need to do to make it work in 9, but you aren't alone.

Oh, and I'm moving it to peripherals, where printer questions go:

Good old OS 9 question. Something that might help is deleting the preferences for that printer. HD>System folder>Preferences>Printing preferences you'll find your printer in there, trash it, restart, and empty your trash, then try and print something.

Good luck
