Trying desperately to get a Power Mac (OS 9.0.4) to print
locally to an Apple LaserWriter NTR via the 8 pin serial
printer port. The port setting on the printer is set to 0
(default) and I've tried it on 3 and using Laserwriter 8
and Laserwriter 300? drivers. Still no success. I don't
have the original floppys with it (which would probably
work) and I am out of ideas.

Question is could I use some type of Canon drivers for this,
or where could I get drivers for this printer? Disk images
of the original floppies?

Any and all help appreciated. Most printers I have setup are
either USB or LAN, I don't have much expertise setting up local
printers.

TIA,
jay

There's a server on hotline that specialises in older laserprinter drivers and stuff. Can't remember what it's called but if you go to:
www.hotlinehq.com/search.html

and search for laserwriter ntr it should turn up something. Of course if you don't already have a hotline client go to www.bigredh.com/ also.

I haven't used this software before, but sounds like it might do what you are looking for...LW Serial bridge 1.1 .... http://www.comcat.com/~daveamy/LW310.html . Please let us know if it works...
best of luck,

Thanks for your help!
Your tips were close to the solution, and the right
direction I needed to take. (I think I couldn't see
the forest through the trees)

I had my Appletalk settings pointed at the Ethernet
card instead of the printer port (duh) after correcting
that I was able to add the PPD and it worked like a champ!

Thanks again!
Jay

PS - I've found that when the rubber rollers get dried out,
you can use alcohol to get some of the stickiness back, and if that fails, you can use "Rubber Roller Restorer" which I think contains Tolulene. Nasty stuff, use sparingly, as it actually removes the top of the dried out rubber roller, and it also will melt some types of plastic.
